It’s that time of year when feral and homeless cats left to fend for themselves come out of hiding after a long winter.
Add in all the new kittens . . . you might say spring and summer are the seasons for “blooming” feline populations.
With “National Pet Week” on the horizon, May 3-9, 2015, we all need to stop and think about what that one small thing is we can do to improve the lives of unwanted and discarded cats in our local areas.
Feral cats are neighborhood citizens, too. They are hard-working primary predators that control rodent populations everywhere.
Do you have the resources to spend the summer building feral cat shelters for the coming autumn/winter? Can you commit to maintaining these shelters and accompanying food and fresh water?
Perhaps you might work with a local shelter, or cat rescue, to host a catch, spay/neuter & release program in your neighborhood. Would you be willing to have a feral cat trap on your property and to donate funds for the spay/neuter procedure at a participating veterinary clinic?
Do you have need of a barn cat? Contact your local shelter or cat rescue. Many of these organizations have abandoned barn cats that need your rural property for their new home.
What about volunteering time at your local shelter or cat rescue sanctuary?
Do you have fundraising skills? No-kill cat rescue sanctuaries are in desperate need of on-going funds to continue their humane operations. You might even use your special skills of persuasion to help find new homes for these cats, especially those with special needs.
Bake a batch of Black Cat Cookies and have a bake sale to raise money for your favorite cat organization.
Have you considered fostering rescue cats? Just think of the huge impact it would make if every cat lover opened their home to one or two rescue cats and worked to find loving adoptive families for them!
If you’re into social media, use your influence to spread the word about cats adoption. The gift of a simple share or retweet can save the life of shelter cat.
Are your pockets full of dollars? Exercise a generous heart by donating to your favorite cat organization.
Maybe you are thinking about adopting a cat. If so, consider giving a home to a special needs or older cat. Such cats frequently get overlooked in favor of kittens. They are pining away for a family. The upside is these kitties are extra appreciative of their new families and have lots of love to give.
Do you know someone who wants to adopt a cat? Help them to find a cat that needs a good home.

Cat doors are an amazing contraption. Did you know they were originally invented by Sir Isaac Newton? His cat, “Spithead” interrupted Newton’s important scientific experiments, asking to go out. Thus the “cat flap”!
Cat quotes to tickle your feline fancy.
"Another cat? Perhaps. For love there is also a season; its seeds must be resown. But a family cat is not replaceable like a wornout coat or a set of tires. Each new kitten becomes its own cat, and none is repeated. I am four cats old, measuring out my life in friends that have succeeded but not replaced one another."
